Phone filming guide

Your phone is enough. The preparation matters.

A practical filming checklist for founders and marketing teams. Record a clear message, useful product shots and clean audio without building a studio.

01
Decide what this
video is for.

Before you film, write one sentence: who is this for, what will they learn, and what should they do next?

Give people a reason to watch

Start with a question customers actually ask, a useful demonstration, or a common misconception you can explain. Show the interesting part early.

For a product video, that might be the difference between two models, what the product does in real use, or a buying mistake customers can avoid.

Write options, then say them aloud

A hook is the opening that earns someone’s attention. Try different openings before recording. Keep the one that is specific, believable and natural to say. Don’t invent a surprising number to make the opening stronger.

Filming with Hanami? We prepare the scripts and shot lists. You bring your product knowledge and your voice. A typical monthly recording session takes 1–3 hours; the plan determines the shots you need.

02
Set up the phone,
light and sound.

  1. Clean the lens and film vertically. Keep your face, hands and product inside the frame. Leave room for captions and the app’s controls.
  2. Start with 1080p at 30 frames per second. That is a practical starting point for ordinary speaking footage. If your editor needs slow motion, cropping or a particular format, agree the settings first.
  3. Face a window. Put the light in front of you rather than behind you. Check that your face and the product are clearly visible.
  4. Put the lens near eye level. Use a stable support. Look at the lens when speaking to the viewer, rather than at your own face on the screen.
  5. Record a short test and listen back. Find a quiet location. Check for echo, wind and machinery. A microphone can help, but a clear recording matters more than owning expensive equipment.

Camera menus vary by phone. Record a test in the format you intend to use and make sure your editor can open it before recording the whole session.

03
Give the editor
something to work with.

Film in manageable sections

You don’t need to perform the entire script perfectly in one take. Finish a thought, pause, then record the next one. Repeat an unclear line rather than trying to repair it while speaking.

Show what you are talking about

Record supporting footage, often called B-roll: hands using the product, a close-up of the detail you mention, the screen you demonstrate, or the place the story happens.

Keep the useful variations

Try another opening or a closer angle when it helps explain the point. Keep takes long enough for your editor to cut cleanly. Send the original files, not versions compressed by a messaging app.

04
Edit for
understanding.

Editing is more than removing silence. Decide what the viewer needs to see and hear at each moment, then test whether the finished video delivers the promise in its opening.

  • Remove repetition and dead time while keeping the meaning intact.
  • Add readable captions. Check them on a phone, including spelling, product names and numbers.
  • Use supporting footage where seeing the thing is clearer than describing it.
  • Keep voice levels consistent and music below the speech.
  • Use effects and changes of angle when they help the story. Avoid movement that competes with it.

Check the rights for music, sound effects, footage and fonts before publishing for a business. A tool being free does not make every asset inside it cleared for commercial use.

05
Before you
press publish.

  1. The opening makes a clear, truthful promise.
  2. The video delivers that promise without a long introduction.
  3. The face or product is bright enough to see.
  4. The full audio is easy to hear.
  5. Captions are readable and don’t cover important details.
  6. Names, numbers and product claims are correct.
  7. The video is vertical and survives the app’s on-screen controls.
  8. Music, footage and fonts are cleared for the intended use.
  9. The viewer has one useful next action.
  10. The responsible person has approved the final version.
